Tropical Storm Developed Nearby Miri

Ho-ho-ho!
My favorite weather goddess sent me an early Christmas present. I was rather hoping she would forget. A tropical storm developed nearby giving some unusual weather inside Miri Marina here in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. I clocked a max gust of 46 knots at the top of the mast. By 4:30AM it was easing off which was fine by me. Just like Santa she likes to deliver her surprises at O-GOD-It’s EARLY. Nice to be in a fairly secure marina and NOT out on the open sea.

I am not real happy here in SE Asia. You may be interested to check out some opinions I found on YouTube. I could not agree more with them. They are not even sailors which opens up another whole bag of worms. It is NOT easy to sail in SE Asia Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand or Indonesia. The people are overall real friendly BUT the governments are definitely anti-western.

Got my mast track replaced last week. The boat is in better shape then it ever has been. I am considering selling MissKiss if I can get a reasonable offer. Still love sailing but the rising costs, worsening weather conditions, deteriorating political considerations are giving me second thoughts.

Question is what am I going to do next. I haven’t a clue as yet.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

Royal Brunei Yacht Club – Borneo Island

I am still alive even if weather and age begs to differ at times. Hope life in the real world is still wonderful for everyone.

Did a lot of work on the boat up in Kudat. My three month Malaysian VISA is up and time to head for Brunei to reset.

Did get my Starlink installed, loving it, what a difference to NOT be held hostage to the corrupt cellular crooks. I still keep one sim-card active for when I am traveling ashore.

Lots of boat work. Fixing stuff as usual, ice machine, inductive cooker, cellphone USB replacement, bunch of dingy battery work, got dive compressor going again, RO water system working again. AND too many other little chores to mention. I still like fixing things.

Rewired the boat a couple of times, still trying to fit in charging systems to bring my ship & motor batteries back up. Love the electric boat but tough here in Borneo with iffy sun, lousy wind and lot of motoring. Charging back up is a long, slow, noisy process. Designed the upgrade so I could have motor for leaving, entering anchorages. Hoped to sail mostly. Did not expect to have to motor most of a day. If there are any winds here they are generally very fickle. Don’t know how those old sailors put up with it. Bet they had plenty of down days in the ole south China sea.

Finally departed Kudat on October 3. Tough going, if any wind its usually on the nose, lots of motor sailing or just motoring. Usually find a safe place & spend an extra day just recharging batteries with 2KW & 1KW generators. Geesh! so noisy. 1KW Honda fuel shutoff broke. Was able to cobble a fix for now.

I am in Brunei – Muara Port at RBYC (Royal Brunei Yacht Club) again. Like the food, water, laundry, HOT SHOWERS! Starlink is working here in Brunei, great since cells won’t unless I add very expensive roaming. More boat work, carrying water, & petrol to the boat. Nice little food store 3KM away to bike to and re-provision. Had bent my Danfoth anchor again in major storm on Keraman island. Nasty night out in cockpit, nude, shivering in driving rain, motoring into the wind for hours after anchor broke free heading MissKiss towards the shore. What a night. No anchor available here, will try for new one in Miri, Malaysia. Did straighten the anchor again and reset it with two anchors holding now. Heavy tide change along with the usual nasty thunderstorms in the evening sure makes this anchorage lively. I have dragged here before.

Most places along the way are pretty muddy or have jellies in them, so not much for snorkeling or diving. I just jump in to cool off a bit and try to avoid the jellies. Helps some but not much change in air & water temperatures. Welcome to Borneo, motoring capital of the world with many muddy rivers to enjoy. Looking forward to sailing to Thailand in search of clear waters to swim, snorkel, dive in once more.

Short note to let you know I am still alive. Haven’t broke any body parts yet. Pulling anchors and sails by hand & just moving MissKiss is healthy for me. Working on the boat while satisfying is not very healthy and hard on this old back.

Starlink Delivered & Installed in Kudat, Malaysia

Yippee new Starlink delivered & installed in Kudat, Malaysia. May be more expensive then dumb phones, but this retired satellite engineer is finally back on satellite. Really want/need reliable weather information for safe sailing. Not held hostage to goofy dumb phone costs, or the reliability/availability problems when traveling. Really wanted Starlink before travel to Philippines. They force you to per-register arrival but only allow 3 days prior to do that. Takes longer to sail to Philippines from Borneo and with no Filipino cell, & your dumb phone roaming doesn’t work, you can be facing large fines for not having the stupid pre-registration properly done.

Rewired Whole Power System, plus Non-Skid in Salon and Cockpit

April & May rewired my whole power system onto what I call the “power wall”.

Visa ends in June again.  Time to sail north to reset the damn Visa.

Got my last care packages from Rick. He sent boat documents and goodies like smoked clam, bean coffee. Wanted to leave this week, holidays till next Wednesday so check out Wednesday & sail to Brunei on Thursday next week. They have more holidays then the Caribbean here I think.

Lots of projects while waiting for Ricks stuff. Non-skid in salon, lot nicer than messy paint on stuff. Re-engineered main motor lift. It would lock at top & I could not release without jumping down on motor platform. Not very safe by myself and coming into a anchorage or mooring. A pick of the successful fish trips with boat in front of me. My lamb stew on board-yummy! Comm cable for motor was 10 meters long, make it a 1 meter cable. Spent a few days re-doing my power. Added a 12V-12V charger for house batteries. Mounted all on the Power wall except for 120V inverter. What a job.

Yesterday & today sanding down & re-painting non-skid in cockpit AND starting on all interior varnishing. No end of work, should be busy right up to departure next week. It is hell because of the heat & humidity. Sometimes middle of the day just sit in front of fans blowing. Work in morning then later afternoon. Being in a marina, can really work at night which would disturb my neighbors, ha need to go find a secluded anchorage where I can jump in the water to cool off and NOT get ate by Crocodiles.

Except for heat & NASTY gnats, surviving so far. Wind is starting to blow to north east, time to use that to head back to Philippines.

Many things to fix as usual – Miri, Malaysia

Many things to fix as usual. Some before leaving, most while under way.
Water pump – replaced before leaving shipyard.
NEMA2K to Simrad plotter – cable rotted off.
Solar panels not charge well, adjusted charger and better now. Still missing 200W of rated power.
House 12V to motor 48V motor batteries takes a LOT of energy. Both the 12V-53V & 120AC-53V chargers pull 1KW and only provide 20A to motor batteries. Need to fix 1KW Honda for more power with spare 40A charger.
See if I can put more power back in. Current 12V charger max is 60A.

Bottom Work – Kudat, Malaysia

Gosh is sure is difficult to do bottom work with a water based paint during Monsoon season at Kudat, Malaysia. Making Progress with both hulls now mostly complete, just keel work to finish. Tried using local workers, they work hard, are cheap to hire, BUT I find I had difficulties (language barrier) in getting them to do what I wanted done. So pretty much solo work for the old man. Guess boat yard work agrees with me. Losing weight and feeling pretty good. Wish I were done with the project!

Work continues

Sun Shade for French Kiss

Hot nasty work this morning, already got 3-4 days into this top. But what a dif it makes with sun on the whole boat. Not sure it will take wind but sure is a lot cooler in boat right now.

New sun top

DC to DC converter

One more technical hurdle accomplished. Last two sea trials my very expensive DC to DC converter did not work. Purchased it to continually pass current from my 12V 800AH batteries to the 48V 200AH set. The SEC converter may not really be made in China because it did come with a manual. Ha! and I really did read it & found an adjustment to vary the voltage set point. Turned it up for LFP batteries and SUCCESS!

EPropulsion Navy 6.0 – Electric Motor

Now the hard part! It is pretty heavy. Damaha was nearly 100LBS, the Navy 6 is about 85LBS. I got help from the yacht club to bring it out & pulling it up on a halyard. Still lighter on platform because of no 6 gallon fuel tank, just the Navy 6. When Hydralic ram died on Damaha had to install pulley system to raise. But the weight on Navy 6 is all in the water. I can NOT bend over & raise it by hand. GOT to have a pulley system to bring it up & hold it.
Rated at 10HP. On sea trials it preformed about like the Damaha 9.9HP. Hi-Thrust prop tried, about 6Knots full speed 1600RPM back off to 1400RPM & easy on AMP current but still an easy 4 knots depending on wind & tide. Very much like the Damaha. They did send a high speed prop that I want to test. Always wondered what a different pitch prop would be like on MissKiss. I will be finding out.
One thing really different, well NO it is really different and somewhat scary. When you put it in gear no noise, will have to get used to that. One thing I ALWAYS really hated about noisy, dirty, polluting, expensive gas burners is the overall noise when forced to motor sail. This may end up being real sweet!
It did take me several days to get all power, control & steering put in. Steering, MissKISS has NEVER had motor steering till now. On sea trial, I put the motor over with rudder & nearly fell off my feet. It really does cut tight with the new steering installed. Still do not intend on using it except in the tight spots I get into. Going to be a learning cure here. HooRAH!

Electrical Work

My E-Propulsion motors have cleared PH Customs and on way here to PP. Time to start running battery cables. I have a 12V DC-DC 48V converter to run off my 800AH house batteries. I have 2 48V 220VAC chargers to run off inverters or 2KW generator. Big job, took most of the week in VERY-VERY HOT conditions. Thank goodness for beer to re-hydrate.

Dingy Epro Spirit Motor – Electric Motor

My Motors have FINALLY arrived, now to install. Dingy first, Spirit 1 the easiest. Good bye hanky, Hello EPro. Rated at 3HP, it does perform like a Tahatsu 3HP motor. The Hanky was 5Hp but with motor on top & gear losses acted like 3HP motor. I can live with this IF it is reliable. Time will tell.

Airmar New IDST810

Local Idiots while cleaning boat bottom, smashed my depth-speed unit to bits. Guess they figured it was a funny looking barnacle. Had to order a new one. Old was Airmar IDST800, new is a IDST810. Bit of luck there, my old Simrad depth-speed display in cockpit is unreadable. I mean it is over 5 years old & is supposed to be unusable. Will NOT buy an old $500+ replacement. This new Airmar uses Bluetooth and I can see information in cockpit on my Dumb-Phone. Sometimes lucky, sometimes not. It is the Allen way!
